Shedeur Sanders Won’t Like Browns’ Latest Ty Simpson Move

The Cleveland Browns have a lot of work to do this offseason. The team has already started by revamping its coaching staff, with former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken replacing Kevin Stefanski as the Browns’ new head coach. The real work that must be done this offseason, though, is on the roster, which is in need of serious help, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.

Easily the biggest question for the Browns right now involves the quarterback position. Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel currently make up the depth chart, but the front office could look to bring another new face to town. If they want to do so during the 2026 NFL Draft, Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson lurks as a potential option, and it seems like Cleveland is going to take a close look at him before it ends up on the clock.

Browns Bring in Ty Simpson for Pre-Draft Visit

The Browns rotated through three different quarterbacks last season, initially starting Joe Flacco before turning things over to Gabriel and Sanders. The latter finished the year as the team’s starter, and while his numbers weren’t particularly good (120/212, 1,400 YDS, 7 TD, 10 INT), he did show more promise during his brief stint under center than Gabriel.

Considering how Gabriel was selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and Sanders in the fifth round, it’s clear that Cleveland isn’t committed to either of these guys for the long term. As a result, all options are on the table this offseason, which could lead to the Browns selecting Simpson, who is widely believed to be the No. 2 quarterback in this draft class behind Indiana Hoosiers’ star Fernando Mendoza.

In his first season as Alabama’s starter, Simpson put up some strong numbers (305/473, 3,567 YDS, 28 TD, 5 INT). While this isn’t a particularly strong quarterback class, the belief is that Simpson could be a late first-round/early second-round pick, which puts him in the Browns’ range. And with the team needing help at quarterback, it decided to bring Simpson in for a pre-draft visit on Thursday.

“Former Alabama QB Ty Simpson is on a visit with the Browns, per sources,” Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported in a post on X. “The consensus QB2 in this year’s NFL Draft, Simpson is coming off a strong showing at the NFL combine. Cleveland owns the No. 6 and 24 picks.”

As of right now, Sanders is in line to be the Browns’ starting quarterback come Week 1 of the 2026 campaign, but things change quickly in the NFL. Again, this team is by no means committed to Sanders as its starter moving forward, which gives the front office the freedom to be as aggressive as it pleases when it comes to making moves at this position.

Simpson doesn’t necessarily have a high ceiling in terms of his potential, but he has a decent floor as a strong pocket passer who can hit throws at all three levels of the field. Truth be told, this doesn’t feel like a quarterback draft class that the Browns should invest in, but if Simpson ends up falling to the second round, he could be a guy worth taking a flier on. Using a first-round pick on him, though, doesn’t seem like something the front office should do.
