When the New York Jets’ 2025 season mercifully came to an end, general manager Darren Mougey made one thing clear at his final press conference.
New York’s brass is going to do everything they can to address the quarterback position.
“I can tell you this, we’ll exhaust every option. You know, free agency, the league, obviously the draft, we will exhaust that and have a good solution for the New York Jets,” Mougey told reporters.
With the Jets sitting at the No. 2 overall pick, they’ll have almost every option available to them, except for Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, in all likelihood.
If Oregon’s Dante Moore doesn’t declare, or New York doesn’t feel he’s the right fit for the currently constructed team, which direction could they pivot?
Jets Trade Proposal Lands Kyler Murray
In a trade idea proposed by Sportsnaut’s Jason Burgos, the New York Jets swing a trade with the Arizona Cardinals to land their disgruntled star quarterback, Kyler Murray.
New York Jets receive: QB Kyler Murray, 2026 No. 3 overall pick
Arizona Cardinals receive: 2026 No. 2 overall pick, 2026 4th round pick
In a deal that would cost the Jets one spot in the first round and an early Day 3 pick, it seems like the most palatable way to land a controversial signal-caller in Murray.
“Speaking of Murray, his days with the Arizona Cardinals are likely over this offseason. If they can’t trade him, there is a chance they might outright cut him. The NY Jets could choose to take on his contract — which has two guaranteed years left — swap picks with AZ and move down to No. 3,” wrote Burgos.
“For the Cards, they get to move all of Murray’s money off the books and the chance to take Dante Moore. For Gang Green, they get a 28-year-old two-time Pro Bowler who might be able to flourish in a new setting. Plus, they can use the No. 3 pick to take the best overall player in the draft after QBs go first and second.”
Murray has talent, there’s no question about that. But for whatever reason, it’s never worked out in Arizona.
Getting a fresh start in New York could be exactly what the former No. 1 overall pick needs to rejuvenate his career, and for this price, the quarterback-desperate Jets could take a flier on a player like Murray, who would certainly perform better than the likes of Justin Fields or Brady Cook.
What Would the Jets Do With the No. 3 Overall Pick?
With the Arizona Cardinals likely to take a quarterback with their newly acquired No. 2 pick, the New York Jets stand at No. 3 with the rest of the board in front of them.
With the quarterback position taken care of, the Jets can take the best player available to them at No. 3, which would likely be a defensive player.
New York had only 26 sacks in 2025, ranked 31st-worst in the league. A pretty sad statistic considering they have two former first-round picks bookending their defensive end spots.
Ohio State’s Arvell Reese, Miami’s Reuben Bain Jr., and Texas Tech’s David Bailey come to mind as the obvious choices for such a porous pass-rushing room.
The Jets, now armed with a new high-upside quarterback and one of the best defenders available in the 2026 draft, now have a better outlook heading into a year where head coach Aaron Glenn’s seat is getting warmer.
