Suspect charged in East Contra Costa road rage shooting

BYRON — A 36-year-old man has been arrested and charged with shooting a man on an East Contra Costa road, after the victim was allegedly brake checked by the suspect’s ladyfriend, court records show.

The 36-year-old Concord man was charged with assault with a firearm, possession of a stolen car, possessing a firearm as a felon, grand theft of a firearm, and receiving stolen property, records show. He was charged last month after police identified him as the shooter in an Oct. 29 freeway shooting.

The victim reported to police that he was driving on Vasco Road in unincorporated East Contra Costa on Oct. 29, when two aggressive cars went past him. The cars, containing a man and a woman, appeared to be working in tandem as the woman slammed on her brakes in front of him, and the man in a white pickup truck rammed his car and fired a shot, striking the victim in the leg, authorities said.

The pickup truck was found abandoned in the area. Police identified the suspect because he had been driving the Jeep when it was pulled over in Concord, authorities said.

Police eventually recovered a Glock 19 firearm, ammunition, suspected fentanyl, and suspected stolen mail during the course of the investigation, according to court records. The man and woman are also suspects in a string of car burglaries in Discovery Bay, authorities said.

The 36-year-old man remains in the Contra Costa jail system and his preliminary hearing has been set for January, records show.
