SUNNYVALE — A high school was placed on lockdown Monday morning out of caution while police responded to a report of potential gunfire nearby, according to an alert from the Sunnyvale Police Department.
The police activity took place near Noranda Drive and Homestead Road shortly after 8 a.m., authorities said. They were responding to a report that someone had shot a firearm into an apartment building. As a precaution, Homestead High School, which is less than a quarter-mile from the intersection, was placed on lockdown. The school is in Cupertino very close to the border with Sunnyvale.
Upon investigating, police found that someone had fired an airsoft-type pellet gun. One individual was detained and was given a citation for negligently discharging the airsoft gun, police added.
There were no injuries, and there are no outstanding suspects, authorities said. The lockdown was lifted before 8:40 a.m.
