Silicon Valley Clean Energy Dream Home rolls into Milpitas

The Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) Dream Home, an electric appliance showroom, made its debut at community events in September and is coming to Milpitas later this month.

The Dream Home, an 18-by-8-foot showcase on wheels, is equipped to let residents see and experience the all-electric equipment they can install in their homes to help reduce air pollution. The demonstration home was built at the San Jose Climate Corps’ yard in partnership with the San Jose Conservation Corps over the course of six months.

The Dream Home will be open to visitors on Oct. 27 at SVCE’s Frunk-or-Treat in Milpitas. The home is equipped with a miniature split heating and cooling system, a 120V heat pump water heater, an induction cooktop, a smart thermostat and an electric fireplace.

The Bay Area has the fifth most year-round particle pollution in the country, according to a report from the American Lung Association. About half of this air pollution is from gas-powered vehicles, but about half comes from combusting fossil fuels in homes and buildings.

“Swapping out gas-powered appliances at home can be an overwhelming task,” said SVCE Board Chair and Saratoga City Councilmember Tina Walia in a release. “The Dream Home is an opportunity for people to see and interact with the all-electric equipment before installing it in their homes.”
