SAN JOSE — A six-year-old boy was fatally wounded in a collision Sunday night while walking on Interstate 280, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.
CHP San Jose officers received a call around 10:55 p.m. Sunday that a vehicle had hit a pedestrian on northbound I-280, south of Leland Avenue. They arrived at the scene just after 11 p.m. Their investigation found that a six-year-old boy had been on the right shoulder before he walked onto the freeway; authorities did not say why they believed the child was out on the roadway in the first place.
Authorities said the boy ran into the number three lane of the freeway for an unknown reason, where a 2024 Nissan Altima hit him.
The driver was a 36-year-old man from San Jose. Authorities did not say if that person or any others were injured.
The boy had major injuries and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. He was later identified by officials as King Holguin, 6, of San Jose.
All lanes of the I-280 northbound south of Leland Avenue were closed around for about half an hour after the crash. The freeway was fully reopened around 12:01 a.m.
