San Jose man arrested on suspicion of spray painting graffiti on Campbell’s water tower

CAMPBELL — A man was arrested in suspicion of vandalizing the city’s historic water tower on Sunday, according to a police department message.

Campbell police said it was the third of three different instances of spray painting on the tower, which they alleged were done by the same suspect. Officials said the tower was hit with a smaller amount of paint on Dec. 26, and then a larger tagging on Jan. 9.

Campbell police received a report around 2:25 a.m. Sunday that someone climbed the tower. Police said that when they arrived, the suspect was still on the tower and causing damage to it.

When police asked the man to get down from the tower, he refused. The police then reparked their cars and “maintained a discreet presence nearby,” according to the statement. Around 4:40 a.m., the suspect climbed down from the tower and was arrested after a brief foot chase.

The suspect, a 24-year-old San Jose resident, was booked into Santa Clara County main jail on suspicion of felony vandalism, possession of graffiti tools and resisting arrest.

The Campbell water tower was built in 1928 at 90 S. First St. It could hold 75,000 gallons of water in its steel tank when it was still used for water storage, but now stands empty. It is considered a historic landmark, paying homage to the city’s agricultural past.

“We take great pride in our city and its landmarks,” said Campbell police Chief Gary Berg. “Thanks to an observant community member who reported seeing the individual on the water tower, we were able to safely apprehend the suspect and hold him accountable for his actions.”

Police said the vandalism to the water tower was removed in coordination with the city’s public works department.
