Record-setter: St. Ignatius star scores six TDs to beat Sacred Heart Cathedral

Jarious Hogan had a night he’ll never forget.

The St. Ignatius running back scored all six St. Ignatius touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 45-28 Bruce-Mahoney game victory over rival Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday night at Kezar Stadium.

The 5-foot-8, 180-pound senior ran for five touchdowns and caught an 8-yard TD pass, setting a West Catholic Athletic League record for most touchdowns in one game.

The Wildcats’ leading rusher has scored 15 TDs on the ground and three more on pass receptions. He has rushed for 848 yards in eight games this season and has missed one contest, according to the stats on MaxPreps.

St. Ignatius — ranked fifth by the Bay Area News Group — improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the West Catholic Athletic League with one regular-season game left next Friday against Archbishop Mitty at Foothill College.

The Wildcats are by themselves in second place in the WCAL standings, one game behind unbeaten St. Francis, which eased past Valley Christian 35-17 Friday night.

SI had to battle against the Fightin’ Irish, a team that’s only 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the WCAL, but one that’s much improved over last year.

Sacred Heart Cathedral took an early 7-3 lead on a 7-yard scamper by quarterback Michael Sargent before Hogan took over.

He had two TD runs of 10 yards, two of 3 yards and one from 2 yards out. His first 3-yard TD, with under a minute to play in the first quarter, gave the Wildcats a lead (10-7) they never relinquished.

But they didn’t get comfortably ahead until Hogan’s 8-yard TD catch from Soren Hummel put them in front 38-28 with 5:29 left in the fourth quarter. He scored on a 10-yard run later in the period for SI’s final points.

Sargent had quite a night in a losing cause, throwing for three TDs in addition to his first-quarter touchdown run.
