OAKLAND — An Emeryville woman reportedly admitted to shooting and killing a security guard during a dispute, claiming she believed he had a gun, but thus far no charges have been filed, authorities said.
The woman was detained for questioning after police learned she and 28-year-old Curtis Haynes had been arguing and exchanging angry texts throughout the day on Jan. 18. At around 7 p.m. that night, Haynes was fatally shot in front of several witnesses on the 8400 block of International Boulevard in Oakland, authorities said.
The 24-year-old Emeryville resident was questioned but later released. Police say the two had pursued a romantic relationship at one point, but that there was tension between them around the time of Haynes’ death. Haynes’ relatives reportedly told police that the woman had accosted Haynes at his workplace, Highland Hospital.
One text, allegedly sent by the woman hours before Haynes was killed said, “come fight,” authorities said.
She claimed that Haynes had confronted her outside of a liquor store that night, and that he was armed. But she added a strange detail that she found a gun that happened to be sitting on a chair outside the store, shot Haynes with it, then put the pistol where she’d found it and fled the scene, authorities said.
Police are still investigating the woman’s claims. For now, no charges have been filed, court records show.
A relative of Haynes, speaking to KTVU under condition of anonymity, told the news station that Haynes worked to resolve disputes peacefully during his job at Highland Hospital.
“He was trying to stop violence and ended up, you know, losing his life to violence,” the relative told KTVU.
