The incident happened at 3:45 p.m. Monday on a creek embankment adjacent to the 2000 block of East Bayshore Road, the Palo Alto Police Department said in a statement.

Officers arrived to find a man suffering from a “major head injury,” according to police. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.

An investigation revealed the victim was with his girlfriend on the creek embankment when they were confronted by an acquaintance holding a golf club. The suspect and the victim got into an argument, during which the suspect threatened to kill the victim and hit him in the head with the golf club, police said.

The suspect then picked up a nearby kitchen knife and again threatened to kill the victim, according to police. When the victim’s girlfriend intervened, the suspect rode away on his bicycle.
