A man throwing rocks at oncoming vehicles in San Jacinto was shot and killed by officers on Monday, Feb. 17, the California Highway Patrol said.
At around 5 p.m., officers from the CHP San Gorgonio Pass area responded to reports of a man throwing rocks at vehicles near Gilman Springs Road, east of Highway 79, the department said in a statement.
The man was throwing rocks at vehicles traveling on the two-way road from the shoulder of the road, Officer Jonathan Torres said. Torres could not provide details about the size of the rocks the suspect threw, but said at least one car had significant damage from a rock.
CHP officers ordered the suspect to stop and attempted to stop him using non-deadly force options. Torres could not provide details on the methods used.
The man continued to approach the officers and a police shooting took place, he said. Cal Fire/Riverside personnel declared the man dead at the scene.
The suspect, whose name was not released, did not have a firearm at the time of the shooting.
No officers were harmed. The shooting is being investigated by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Force Investigations Detail.
