DUBLIN — A man has been sentenced to a year of house arrest, but will likely only serve about half of that, for killing a bicyclist in a Fremont hit-and-run crash in 2019, court records show.
Rosendo Cruz Vargas, 31, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge and a felony hit-and-run count, but with no plea deal in place. The final sentencing determination was left up to Judge Clifford Blakely, who said he considered “all relevant factors” before coming to a decision. Vargas was technically sentenced to a year in county jail, the maximum allowable, but allowed to participate in a house arrest program with GPS monitoring.
Vargas will also serve a two-year probation term, records show. He was given six days of credit for time served in jail, and with good behavior his house arrest term will end in July.
Vargas was charged in 2019, in connection with a hit-and-run crash in August of that year. The victim, Kiranjot Singh Deol, was in a bicycle lane at around 5 a.m., when a car swerved and struck him for no apparent reason, police said at the time. Vargas was found to have been driving 69 mph on Boyce Road, where there was a posted speed limit of 45 mph, according to court records.
Authorities said that Vargas did call 911 to report the crash, but that he kept driving after the collision and waited 11 minutes to call it in. After the collision, he drove to his workplace and had two family members who also worked there drive him back to the collision site. When police arrived, he was cooperative and admitted to being the driver.
