Man found dead in San Mateo County jail

REDWOOD CITY — A man died in custody at San Mateo County’s Maple Street Correctional Center on Saturday, authorities announced Sunday.

Sheriff’s personnel found the inmate, described as a 25-year-old white man, unresponsive in a cell around 4:50 p.m., and administered lifesaving measures until medical staff stationed in the center arrived, according to details shared by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook.

Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the facility by emergency service personnel. Officials had conducted a routine safety check of the general population pod the man was housed in just prior, officials said.

Independent investigations into the man’s death are being conducted by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office and Sheriff’s detectives.

The identity of the man is being withheld amid notifications to next of kin.

“We understand the concerns and questions that may arise from any in-custody death. While the independent investigations are ongoing, we want to assure the community that once the investigations are complete, the Sheriff’s Office will make the findings public,” read the Facebook post.
