OAKLAND — Police here have identified a man who was shot and killed while assisting a loved one who’d car had been stolen.
Kody Johnston, 25, of Alameda, was shot and killed around 9 p.m. on Dec. 30 at the 4300 block of Fleming Avenue. Police have not arrested a suspect, but authorities say that the gunman walked up, ordered Johnston out of a parked car he was sitting in, then shot him when he refused.
Johnston was assisting a close friend whose car had been stolen earlier in the month, authorities said. Police are investigating whether the prior car theft if connected to the homicide.
At Johnston’s funeral, held earlier this month, friends and family remembered him as “a lover of his family, both blood and chosen.”
“Kody had a smile and a laugh that was infectious,” literature distributed at his memorial service says. “His hugs always made you realize just how much he loved you. It was hard not to be happy around him.”
Johnston’s killing was followed by another homicide about 10 hours later in West Oakland.
