Hayward man told girlfriend he loved her as he died from stab wounds, police say

HAYWARD — The suspect in a Hayward double stabbing has been charged with murder and attempted murder for allegedly killing a man and stabbing the victim’s girlfriend in the chest, court records show.

Randall “Bubba” Stoops, 34, is set to enter a plea on Thursday morning to both charges. He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.

Prosecutors charged Stoops with murdering 39-year-old Hayward resident Jose Quevedo, and attempting to murder Quevedo’s girlfriend. Police say that as Quevedo and his girlfriend lay bleeding from stab wounds outside of their apartment on the 24000 block of Silva Avenue, Quevedo told the woman he loved her shortly before he succumbed to his injuries.

The stabbing occurred on the night of Aug. 23, and was preceded by an argument and a “wrestling” fight, according to police.

It all started when Quevedo and his girlfriend argued and fought with Stoops after they witnessed him dragging his teenage nephew — who had come home after his parents’ curfew — into Stoops’ apartment. The couple told police they confronted Stoops because they had witnessed him slam the boy’s head into a wall before and feared he was being too rough with the youngster, according to authorities.

After a brief fight that Stoops allegedly lost, he left, returned with a knife, and stabbed both victims, according to police.

The woman also told police that the stabbing was witnessed by several members of Stoops’ families and a crowd of area residents, none of whom intervened, authorities said. Police arrested Stoops in December after multiple witnesses identified him as the attacker, court records show.

When Stoops was arrested, he “he provided a statement waiving his rights per Miranda and confessed to stabbing,” police said in court filings.
