HAYWARD — The defendant in a grisly fatal shooting and body burial has agreed to serve 15 years and eight months in prison through a plea deal, court records show.
Andres Sanchez, 40, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and gun possession in exchange for the agreed-upon sentence. Alameda County prosecutors dismissed a murder charge against him as part of the deal, court records show.
Sanchez was transferred to North Kern State Prison on Feb. 21, and he remains there, records show.
Last year, prosecutors charged Sanchez with murdering a man named Miguel Estrada during an argument. Police said at the time the two were at an encampment in Hayward where Estrada lived, near Hayman and San Antonio streets.
Sanchez shot Estrada once, seriously injuring him, then proceeded to fire several more times as Estrada begged for help, authorities said at the time. He later allegedly dug a shallow grave and buried Estrada a few feet from Estrada’s tent.
Sanchez was arrested four days after the April 26, 2024 homicide after leading police on a short chase on his ATV, before running into a home and barricading himself inside. In the resulting police standoff, officers were able to get the residents out of the home, and arrested Sanchez several hours afterward.
Sanchez was not allowed to possess guns, in part due to a conviction from an August 2023 incident where he allegedly led police on a chase and gave them a false name, court records show.
