Free File, Direct File: How to use free IRS tax-filing options for Californians

Californians who don’t want to pay for tax-filing software or a commercial preparer have some free online options through the Internal Revenue Service.

Below are the basics of the federal filing methods available for the 2024 tax year:

Free File. Available to filers with adjusted gross incomes of $84,000 or less. A link on the IRS site lets you choose from among several commercial “trusted partners” that provide free access to guided tax software and filing. Not all of them have the same eligibility standards, and some will charge to submit your state return even if you qualify for free federal finding.

Direct File. This program, in which you file online with the IRS for free, has a higher income limit ($200,000 in wages for a single filer) but it does have restrictions on types of income and deductions — for instance, it’s not for anyone who has an IRA distribution, itemized deductions or income from gig work. You’ll also need to file your state taxes separately.

Free File Fillable. This option is available for anybody, no limits on types of income. The only requirement is a phone number where you can receive a text message for identity verification. You fill out online versions of the tax forms yourself, with no guidance or assistance other than math calculations, and submit them to the IRS. As with the others, state taxes require a separate filing.

Free in-person assistance. The IRS oversees volunteer programs that provide free tax-filing assistance to people with incomes of  $67,000 or less or who are 60 or older, disabled or not fluent in English. Find help sessions near you and schedule an appointment through the IRS’s locator tool. Military servicemembers and some veterans qualify for free MilTax software and support.

To file a California return free, find the link for CalFile at the state Franchise Tax Board’s website. It uses information from your federal return, with some adjustments, to determine your state tax liability.
