Firefighters brought a structure fire in a sheet metal building at San Rafael Airport under control early Sunday morning, fire officials said.
Crews arrived at the airport at 400 Smith Ranch Road to find the approximately 2,000-square-foot building fully involved in flames around 4:51 a.m., according to fire officials.
The firefighters kept the blaze from spreading to adjacent buildings and brought it under control in about an hour. The building is a total loss, according to fire officials.
No injuries have been reported so far, officials said. The building was unoccupied.
The building was being used as a machine shop for repairs, fire officials said, and contained flammable and combustible liquids, according to fire officials.
An unknown amount of these products was spilled and mixed with the runoff of firefighting water and the Marin County Hazardous Materials Response Team was dispatched to oversee containment and remediation, officials said.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
