Driver dies in single-vehicle wreck in East Oakland

OAKLAND — A 32-year-old driver died Wednesday afternoon after her vehicle crashed in East Oakland.

The woman, an Oakland resident, was the only person in a Chrysler sedan that crashed about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday into a pole on the 3800 block of International Boulevard, in the Fruitvale District, police said. She died later at a hospital.

Police said she was driving at high speed westbound on International Boulevard in a bus lane before the vehicle went out of control and hit the pole.

The woman was identified by the coroner’s bureau Thursday as Savannah Mitchell.

The death is the first traffic fatality of the year investigated by Oakland police. In 2024, 27 people died in traffic-related deaths in the city, authorities said.

The crash remains under investigation, police said. Anyone with information can call Oakland police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570, and tipsters can send pictures or videos to cidvideos@oaklandca.gov.
