Bay FC’s Beattie wins NWSL honor for breast cancer awareness advocacy

Bay FC’s Jen Beattie was named the overall winner of the 2024 Lauren Holiday Impact Award, which honors the National Women’s Soccer League player who best exemplifies a spirit and commitment to community service.

Beattie was nominated for the award for her involvement within the breast cancer community in the Bay Area — and previously in the United Kingdom — after her own early diagnosis with the disease in 2020.

For winning the NWSL’s community award named for Holiday, a two-time gold medal winner for the United States Women’s National Team who is a brain tumor survivor, Beattie will donate the $30,000 in charitable funds to Pink Ribbon Good. Beattie is a community partner for Pink Ribbon Good, a Bay Area non-profit that provides support for those battling breast and gynecological cancer.

“My work with breast cancer charities means so much to me and it has since 2020 when I started doing it after my own cancer diagnosis,” said the Scotland native Beattie. “To have a legend like Lauren Holiday at the forefront: understanding the impact she has had in the community beyond football is why it matters the most to me. I love football – it’s my job and my passion – but I think it’s important to use the platform we have whether it’s big or small, to raise as much awareness as possible and ultimately create a community to help people.”

The 33-year-old Beattie is a decorated veteran who has 143 international caps for the Scottish National Team in addition to playing for Arsenal, Celtic and Manchester City of the prestigious World Soccer League since 2008. She joined Bay FC for its inaugural season after being acquired from Arsenal for an undisclosed transfer fee in February.

Before being honored as the overall winner of the community award, Beattie was named the NWSL’s Fan Vote Winner on Nov. 1. The win allowed her to donate $5,000 to Cancer Research UK, which Beattie has previously partnered with.

Holiday, now 37, was the NWSL’s first superstar as she helped FC Kansas City win back-to-back league championships in 2014 and ’15. After she retired, Holiday and her husband, Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday, co-founded the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Impact Fund to support nonprofits, businesses and educational institutions to help combat socioeconomic inequalities.
