Antioch police say robbery attempt sparked deadly gunfight

ANTIOCH – A gunfight that left two men dead earlier this month in Antioch stemmed from an attempted robbery, police said Thursday.

The fatal encounter happened around 10:35 p.m. on Dec. 7, in the parking lot of the Delta Bowl, located at 3300 Delta Fair Blvd., according to the Antioch Police Department.

At the time, police said the suspect – identified as 35-year-old D’eantray Reed – approached the victim – identified as 34-year-old Antonio Drake – as he was preparing to drive away in his car. They exchanged gunfire and both were fatally wounded.

One man died at the scene and the other at an area hospital.

“After Antioch police detectives conducted a thorough investigation, the incident was believed to be an attempted robbery in which the suspect and victim shot one another,” Sgt. William Whitaker said in a news release Thursday.

A review of video surveillance and other evidence suggested Reed and Drake did not know each other prior to the shooting, according to Whitaker.

No one else is wanted in connection with the shooting, which Whitaker said “appears to be an isolated incident.”
