Alameda welder Shane Killian charged with murdering his family and attempted murder of 1-year-old son

ALAMEDA — Prosecutors here have filed four counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and other felony charges against a man who is accused of killing his son, his wife, his in-laws, and attempting to kill his 1-year-old boy, court records show.

Shane Killian, a 54-year-old welder living in Alameda, has now been charged in the Bay Area’s most shocking and tragic crime in recent memory. In addition to the murder counts, prosecutors charged him with possessing an assault weapon, possessing an “unconventional” pistol, and counts of domestic violence and elder abuse.

He remains in jail without bail, and won’t be due in court for an arraignment until July 22, court records show.

Police were called to Killian’s home on the 400 block of Kitty Hawk Road at 9 p.m. Wednesday, and arrived to find one of the victims — an adult male — dying from a gunshot wound outside. Killian emerged from the house a few moments later and was arrested. Police haven’t said whether he provided a statement.

Killian’s 1-year-old son was hospitalized in critical condition and remains at the hospital. Officials did not publicly update the toddler’s condition Thursday or Friday.

The suspect and victims had all been living together at the home for roughly six months, authorities said. Killian has no other criminal history listed in Alameda County, court records show.

The mass shooting was the city’s worst since 1985, when a woman and her three children were murdered by a boarder in their home who died of suicide in the same incident.
