82-year-old Santa Cruz County pedestrian killed in e-bike crash

SANTA CRUZ — An 82-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by an electric bike driven by an 80-year-old man, the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Cruz office wrote on its Facebook page.

According to the CHP, the crash happened around 5:50 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, in the unincorporated Pleasure Point area. The man was riding an Aventon Pace 500 on the right shoulder of Opal Cliff Drive at an undetermined rate of speed when he crashed into a woman walking near Court Drive.

The pedestrian sustained major injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Valley Medical Center, where she died. The cyclist also sustained injuries and was transported by ground to Dominican Hospital.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the CHP, and drugs and alcohol are not being considered factors at this time.

The post recommended that pedestrians and cyclists wear reflective materials or carry lights while it is dark out.
