Vikings Announce Major Reason for Kwesi Adofo-Mensah Firing

On Jan. 30, the Minnesota Vikings caught many by surprise with the firing of general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah after failing to make the playoffs this past 2025 NFL season.

Moreover, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported, citing sources, that throughout the season, league circles discussed an underlying “tension” in the Vikings’ building. Additionally, Schefter reported, citing a league source, that it had been “ugly” in Minnesota.

Then, after the firing was announced on Jan. 30, Vikings owner and president Mark Wilf explained the decision to part ways with Adofo-Mensah and move in a different direction.

“We held our end of the season organizational meetings over a couple of weeks and then spent this past week as an ownership group reviewing, discussing, and how best to move forward,” Wilf told reporters at his press conference. “This is a critical offseason. Ultimately, we felt the change was necessary in football operations, and did not feel comfortable going forward into this offseason with the current leadership.

“It’s not about any one decision or move. We looked at the situation cumulatively; we just didn’t feel confident going through the the offseason, an additional draft, and free agency with this structure. We have an urgency to create a winning football team and establish sustainable success for our fans.”

Minnesota Ends Kwesi Adofo-Mensah Era In Surprising Way

The timing caught many by surprise. Adofo‑Mensah had just addressed the media Jan. 13 after the season and spent the week in Mobile, Alabama, working Senior Bowl practices when the Vikings decided to part ways with him. Moreover, this decision from Vikings ownership also came about seven months after he agreed to a multiyear contract extension with the club.

During his four years running Minnesota’s front office, the team posted three winning campaigns and compiled a .632 regular‑season win percentage, ranking among the league’s better marks over that span. But the Vikings went 0‑2 in the playoffs, and many of the players taken in drafts under his watch have yet to make significant impacts.

The plan had been to develop quarterback J.J. McCarthy while staying competitive, but that effort fell short this past season despite a massive cash commitment to the 2025 roster. It will be interesting to see how Minnesota now handles the QB position this offseason with Adofo‑Mensah now out of the picture.

Vikings Explains Reason to Appoint Rob Brzezinski

Wilf also explained why the Vikings are turning to Rob Brzezinski, the team’s executive vice president of football operations, to oversee the front office through the 2026 draft. After that, the organization plans to begin a search for a new general manager.

“Rob brings tremendous credibility and experience, understands our roster, and has an innate ability to build consensus with coaches and personnel,” Wilf added. “In terms of the long-term, certainly we will have conversations and begin laying the groundwork for a process now. But from a practical perspective of where we are in the football cycle, and in order to give ourselves the best outcome, we expect to conduct a thorough search to identify our next general manager after the draft.”
