Red Wings Land Star Defenseman in Last-Minute Trade

The Detroit Red Wings waited until the last minute to make a major move in the trade market. Detroit was linked with several top players in recent weeks. The team is currently holding on to the third spot in the Atlantic Division standings and needed some reinforcements heading towards the playoffs.

Ahead of the deadline, the Red Wings acquired winger David Perron from the Ottawa Senators for a fourth-round draft pick. They also sent fellow forward Elmer Soderblom to the Pittsburgh Penguins to grab a third-round selection. Nevertheless, the biggest deal of the day for Detroit came in the final minutes.

The Red Wings officially landed veteran blueliner Justin Faulk from the St. Louis Blues. Faulk was widely seen as the top right-shot defenseman available in the trade market. To acquire the star, Detroit sent first and third-round draft picks to St. Louis. The Red Wings are also offloading blueliner Justin Holl as part of the agreement. Although it is a relatively steep price to pay, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman had to pull the trigger.

Bleacher Report previously claimed that a top-four blueliner was Detroit’s biggest need in the trade market. The club clearly needed to make a top addition to the position. Outside of Mo Seider and Simon Edvinsson, there was a fairly significant top-off in quality among the Red Wings’ defense. Yzerman, however, has now given his blue line a major boost.

Justin Faulks Labeled ‘Ideal Fit’ for Detroit Red Wings

GettyJustin Faulk was arguably the top right-shot blueliner in the trade market.

Acquiring Faulk is seen as the best-case realistic scenario for the Red Wings. In fact, the veteran was previously labeled as the “ideal fit” in Detroit. Faulk is good enough to be heavily relied on. While the Blues are experiencing a disappointing campaign, the blueliner has posted an average TOI of 22:30 per game this season. He has also featured in every matchup for St. Louis in 2025-26.

Along with his impressive TOI stats, Faulk can also help provide some offensive firepower from the back. The veteran already has 32 points on the season so far, with nine of these points coming on the power play. Seider and Edvinsson are the only two Detroit defensemen with at least 20 points on the campaign.

Faulk is now set to stay in Detroit for at least one more season. The veteran carries a $6.5 million AAV cap hit, and his current contract extends through the 2026-27 campaign. Money, however, should not be a problem for the Red Wings. According to PuckPedia.com, they have some of the most cap space in the entire league.

Trade Gives Detroit Much-Needed Boost Heading Towards Playoffs

The deal will certainly make Red Wings fans happy. Star center Dylan Larkin should also be pleased with his organization. The team’s captain previously voiced his frustrations with a lack of incoming trades a year ago. Larkin specifically noted that his team “didn’t gain any momentum from the trade deadline,” moving towards a failed playoff push at the time.

With Faulk now in place, Detroit receives a significant boost as it looks to qualify for the postseason for the first time in a decade. Assuming he stays on his preferred side, the veteran should slot in beside Ben Chiarot in the Red Wings lineup.
