Prosecutors rejected charges against a person of interest taken into custody after a fatal shooting this weekend near a Lincoln Park bar that has since been closed by the city.
A spokesperson for Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke said “the evidence doesn’t support criminal charges” in the shooting late Sunday near The Dime, 2263 N. Lincoln Ave. The Dime was shuttered Tuesday by acting Chicago police Supt. Fred Waller.
Malik McCorkle, 30, was shot multiple times and killed outside a nearby bar called King of Cups, 2238 N. Lincoln Ave. Witnesses said the shooting happened after fights broke out inside The Dime. An altercation eventually spilled onto the sidewalk and turned deadly, according to city officials and nearby business owners.
Local Ald. Timmy Knudsen (43rd) previously said surveillance video from businesses showed people openly carrying weapons on the block before the shooting. On Wednesday, Knudsen said he has “faith and an expectation that the State’s Attorney will press charges and prosecute in full once the correct suspect has been found.”
“My office urges anyone with evidence to contact the Area Three Detective Unit,” he said in a statement. “I send my heartfelt condolences to the family of Malik McCorkle.”
