Ten Hag reveals how he turned the Man Utd duo into a deadly couple as Arsenal’s ‘breakout’ star is described as ‘very special’

Former Arsenal star Robin van Persie labeled a Man Utd ‘breakout’ star as ‘one to watch’ and ‘very special’, while Erik ten Hag admitted he did ‘whatever it takes’ to see Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford in it help become a deadly duo.

Van Persie became a Man Utd title winner during his three-year spell at Old Trafford between 2012 and 2015. However, it was in the capital where he really cemented his reputation as one of the world’s best strikers of his time.

Van Persie was named Arsenal’s player of the season in 2008–09 and 2011–12. He narrowly scored a goal in two with the Gunners and would have scored far more than his final tally of 132 goals for Arsenal had it not been for a series of injury problems.

Van Persie – the all-time Dutch top scorer at international level with 50 goals – recently interviewed Erik ten Hag.

The pair took a tour of Man Utd’s Carrington training complex, although the main event was a one-on-one chat between the Dutchman.

About BTSportVan Persie spoke highly of the understanding forged between Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford this season.

Aside from his collapse against Liverpool, Fernandes has been at his best this year, finishing second to Kevin de Bruyne great opportunities created metric this designation.

Many of the opportunities he created have fallen to Rashford, who is in the midst of the best season of his career. In fact, his mark of 27 goals has already surpassed his previous season high for goals (22 in 2019/20).

When Van Persie asked if Ten Hag put more emphasis on these two players communicating in training, the United manager admitted: “Yes, you have to find out where the connections are.

“Once you feel the players connect, you can improve them.

“Not by focusing on it every day, but by just putting them together [training] exercises and show them video clips on how they can benefit from each other.”

The extra work Ten Hag has tasked the couple with is clearly paying off.

“Garnacho has to be watched,” said Van Persie. “You know he’s very young, a very talented player.

“If you look at how he deals with difficult situations, how he deals with pressure, how he builds up, it’s something very special, especially for his age.”

Finally, Van Persie praised his compatriot and former Feyenoord team-mate Tyrell Malacia.
