Ryan Reynolds hangs up on Sir Alex Ferguson in awkward video call with Manchester United legend as he and Rob McElhenney announce Wrexham’s pre-season game against the Red Devils in the United States
Wrexham has hosted its most famous game since being bought by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and to celebrate Sir Alex Ferguson was the centerpiece of an amusing promotional video.
The July 25 game was announced by both teams on Monday and will be played at Snapdragon Stadium, where United will field a team of mostly youngsters against Wrexham.
“We look forward to playing in the United States for the first time in club history,” the Welsh club tweeted.
“The game against Manchester United at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego is sure to be a memorable event.”
Reynolds and McElhenney, who completed a $2.5million takeover of Wrexham in November 2020, took part in a video with Ferguson – United’s amazing executive – that was shared on social media on Monday.
The skit shows the two Wrexham owners anxiously awaiting a video call with the Red Devils legend to discuss the pre-season game.
“I can’t believe we’re about to speak to Sir Alex Ferguson, arguably the greatest football manager of all time,” said McElhenney. “He’s won 13 Premier League titles.”
Both McElhenney and Reynolds express their excitement to the executive, but Ferguson seemingly tunes it out.
After a few nervous and awkward silences, the Hollywood stars suggest how Wrexham and Manchester United fans will be enjoying the occasion, but Ferguson again responds with silence.
The awkward tension clearly gets to be too much for Reynolds when the Deadpool star then suggests that Ferguson “lives in it.” [their] Heads Rent Free’ before you come up with an excuse to hang up.
“Sir Alex, we’d like to talk more about the big match taking place on July 25th at SnapDragon Stadium in San Diego,” he says, “but Rob here has a hair appointment in Beverly Hills. He needs to make it right away, so the schedule for that is inflexible. So thank you sir, we appreciate you. Bye!’

The clip then cuts to Ferguson having tea in his office when asked how the conversation with Wrexham’s owners went. He replies: “They were mute. Never heard anything.”
Wrexham are hoping to be promoted to the fourth tier of English football by the game. It leads the fifth-rate National League.

Both Reynolds and McElhenney have been called up in the club’s first squad for a seven-a-side tournament due to be held in the United States this summer.
Wrexham has signed up for The Soccer Tournament, a winner-takes-all tournament taking place June 1-4 in Cary, North Carolina, where 32 teams will compete for a $1 million prize.
