‘Always’: Luis Suarez now sends an ’emotional’ message to the former Liverpool team-mate after Friday’s news

Gremio striker Luis Suarez has congratulated former Liverpool team-mate Lucas Leiva on his retirement.

According to BBC Sport, Lucas has had to hang up his boots after discovering a heart problem. The news has sparked a love burst from so many of the 36-year-old’s former colleagues at Liverpool.

Having spent three and a half years together at Anfield, Suarez and Lucas know each other quite well. The two were indeed reunited this summer when the Uruguayan joined the Brazilian at Gremio.

So Lucas’ forced decision may have made Suarez even more poignant. As a result, El Pistolero took to his Instagram Stories to post a picture of him and Lucas partying together in Liverpool.

“My friend Lucas Leiva, congratulations on your wonderful career,” Suarez wrote in Spanish. “We will always support you and your family’s success for whatever is to come, it will only get better I am sure.”

“Impossible not to get emotional,” Suarez added alongside video of a tearful Lucas announcing his decision.

Lucas says goodbye in troubling circumstances

What a sad sight it was to see Lucas crying as he said goodbye to his playing career. He might not have been the most famous player to ever wear the Liverpool shirt, but he was one of the most dedicated.

His commitment to being a Red always came through loud and clear. Whether he was at Lazio or Gremio, there was always the feeling he would rather be at Liverpool. In any case, it would be a shock to see such a man retire. But the circumstances of Lucas’ early exit make him all the more emotional.

With that in mind, it was also great to see Liverpool icon Kenny Dalglish reach out to Lucas on Saturday. King Kenny has been public with his admiration for the player and man he coached at Liverpool for 18 months and it showed in a beautiful Twitter message last night.

“Lucas – I hope everything is alright. The respect you have at Liverpool is really genuine. We’re all here if we can be of any help, and we wish you the best of luck in your next chapter. These pictures speak louder than any words. YNWA,” wrote Dalgish.

A message echoed by Liverpool fans around the world. Happy retirement Lucas. We hope to see you again soon at Anfield Road.
