What’s closed for New Year’s Day, Wednesday, Jan. 1, in the Los Angeles area

Government offices — Los Angeles city and county, national and state — superior courts, libraries and schools are normally closed for New Year’s Day.

Here’s a sampling of government offices and other services that are closed or have altered schedules on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025.

Banks: Closed. Also, New York Stock Exchange markets are closed, (www.nyse.com/markets/hours-calendars).

Courts: Closed. Superior Court 2025 holidays, www.lacourt.org/holiday/ui/index.aspx

Libraries: Los Angeles Public Library locations are closed, www.lapl.org/holiday-closures

Los Angeles County Library locations are closed, lacountylibrary.org

Mail: The U.S. Postal Service does not deliver regular mail and post offices are closed. www.usps.com. Holidays 2025: about.usps.com/newsroom/events/

Transit: Buses and subway services in Los Angeles run on a Saturday/Sunday/Holiday schedule. Check this page for rail and bus schedules: www.metro.net/riding/schedules-2/. Metro’s home page: www.metro.net

Metrolink trains run on a normal weekend schedule on Jan. 1 on the Ventura County, Antelope Valley, San Bernardino, Orange County, 91/Perris Valley and Inland Empire-Orange County lines. Metrolink’s $10 Holiday Pass is available on this day. Also, for those who want to go to the 2025 Tournament of Roses Parade, see details about taking added special morning Metrolink trains to LA Union Station (and then transfer for free to Metro A Line that goes to Pasadena) here: tinyurl.com/rkxfuts2. Trash: Pickup schedule for Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment is postponed by one day for customers whose trash is normally picked up on Wednesday (to be picked up on Jan. 2); customers whose trash is normally picked up on Thursday (to be picked up on Jan. 3); and customers whose trash is normally picked up on Friday (picked up on Jan. 4).
