Viewpoint girls soccer teams knocks off Heritage to claim CIF Southern Section Division 5 title

MENIFEE — Something had to give Friday night in the CIF Southern Section Division 5 girls soccer championship match.

Through four playoff matches, Heritage’s defense had yielded just one goal. Facing them was a Viewpoint offense that scored 11 goals en route to the finals.

Charlotte Young scored the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute, and Viewpoint hung on for a 2-1 win.

It’s the second title in program history and Zaira Fonseca’s first as head coach. She was also on staff as an assistant in 2017 when the Patriots won their other title.

“That’s a very good Heritage backline, but I felt like we’d have the speed to be able to create some opportunities against them that we converted,” Fonseca said. “This is a proud mama bear moment for me because of my time as an assistant, and to see these girls that I’ve coached since the fourth grade bring a title home is such an incredible feeling.”

Misahra Briscoe scored Viewpoint’s first goal from 5 yards out with 14 minutes of first half action gone on a pass over the middle from Sam Marella. It was the first goal that Heritage’s backline had yielded since opening round action Feb. 12.

Viewpoint finished fourth in the Gold Coast League standings but secured the lone at-large berth in the Division 5 playoffs.

“When brackets came out and we saw we had gotten in we knew that this opportunity to keep going was a huge blessing and one we wanted to take advantage of as long as possible,” Briscoe said. “We saw them on film and knew that their backline was going to be tough, but if we kept finding ways to get behind them we’d eventually punch through.”

Twenty minutes later, Heritage’s Lexie Jimenez leveled the match, scoring on a breakaway that snuck just to the left of Viewpoint goalie Anya Emerson.

“In the second half I thought we did pretty good with possession, but their midfielders did a nice job of getting back defensively and making the looks we were able to get really tough,” Heritage coach Michael Mattison said. “At this point everything’s gravy, so we’ll shake this off, come back to practice on Monday and get ready for whoever we’ll play on Tuesday. But no matter what, this has been just an excellent year.”

Heritage had controlled possession in the second half time until Young’s goal from 30 yards out snuck past Heritage goalie Brisa Quiroz, who finished with 12 saves.

“We have so many amazing pieces on this team, but we really had to learn to play together,” Young said. “Those last 18 minutes after that second goal felt like an eternity, but we had every confidence in our defense that they’d make it hold up and we’d bring home that champions plaque.”
