For another week, UCLA will extend virtual classes amid the devastating Los Angeles County wildfires.
The Westwood university will conduct remote instruction for undergraduate and graduate courses through Friday, school officials announced Saturday. On-campus operations will continue to be modified during this time, as well.
The campus is not currently under an evacuation order, but evacuation warning has been issued nearby.
Officials urge people on campus to remain vigilant and “be ready to evacuate, should the alert be extended to our campus.”
“Throughout all of this, I have been deeply moved by the unwavering kindness, empathy and support shown by our Bruin community,” said Chancellor Julio Frenk. “I want to thank you for these acts of compassion, which I have seen firsthand. We are seeing what happens when we all come together.”
The Palisades fire grew to 22,660 acres by Saturday morning, with evacuations expanding rapidly in Encino, Tarzana and Brentwood since Friday night.
The Eaton fire that has caused widespread destruction in several foothill communities grew slightly to 14,117 acres charred by Friday, Jan. 10, with decreased overnight winds helping crews reach 3% containment as they worked to set a perimeter line on the deadly blaze.
At least 13 people have died amid the fires.
