Is it too early to pitch 2025 Oscars hosts?

Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, who star in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” presented the first award of the night. Not only did the bit draw laughs from the audience, but it got many suggesting the trio host the Oscars together.

If a show makes you laugh, does it count as a comedy?“The Bear” became the most nominated comedy in Emmy history this year, but many viewers felt the show doesn’t fit the category and should be classified as a drama instead.

Every time I think about The Bear being in the comedy category for the Emmys I can feel an ulcer developing.

— Laraine Newman (@larainenewman) September 15, 2024

I really, really, *really* need the Television Academy to fix the category criteria before next year’s #Emmys because ‘The Bear’ sweeping comedy over shows like ‘Abbott Elementary’ is actually infuriating. All those actors and actual comedies deserve better.

When Veep won everything (and deservedly so) I know it annoyed people but it was a full blown comedy. THE BEAR IS NOT A COMEDY pic.twitter.com/v7R97qnaUP

— Becca (@ImWatchingBravo) September 16, 2024

Look, this isn’t a fair thing to keep asking the actors. But it 100% matters. Writing jokes and punchlines is a very different thing than finding humor in a dramatic story. Comedy writers work damn hard at it, and the academy needs to fix the categories once and for all. https://t.co/kfCuACIk4x

John Oliver thanks his dog

The host of “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” was in the middle of his speech for winning outstanding scripted variety series when he began to thank his family’s dog that had recently passed away and began to be played off the stage. The comedian called out the moment and was able to finish his speech.

So this was something. John Oliver wins an Emmy. He starts to thank his dog, who recently died, and they start playing him off stage, which he did not appreciate. pic.twitter.com/j86dAMj8N2

Where is everyone?

About 45 minutes into the show, viewers began noticing that the Peacock Theater seemed a little more empty than they were used to seeing. Notably, the center area of the auditorium seemed to be half-empty.

Why are there so many empty seats at the #Emmys ?

— Rocco Marrongelli (@RoccoSupreme) September 16, 2024

Is is just me or does it looks like there are tons of empty seats at the Emmys? And what was with that weird Johnny Walker ad? #Emmys

— Megan (@meganlela) September 16, 2024

With respect, whatever happened to the concept of “seat-fillers”? I have never seen an awards audience as empty as at this Emmys…

Lamorne Morris wins his first Emmy Award

The actor won outstanding supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie for his role in “Fargo.” During Morris’ speech, he hilariously called out his four-year-old daughter for not believing he’d win. While this might have seemed random to some, Morris had previously shared a clip on social media showing when he found out he had been nominated for the category and his daughter proceeded to make fun of him for crying over the exciting news.

People love ‘Traitors’

The Peacock Original Series was nominated for its second season for outstanding reality competition program. The reality TV competition gained attention last summer after clips of the show started gaining attention on TikTok. The series felt like for many reality TV junkies as it brought together stars from both competition shows like “Big Brother,” “The Challenge” and “Survivor,” as well as Bravo shows like “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” “Married to Medicine” and “Shahs of Sunset.”

Reunited and it feels so good

The 75th Emmy Awards in January brought together many cast reunions to celebrate the biggest night in television. It was a hit among viewers so it wasn’t surprising to see some cast reunions return to the annual award show. Prior to the show, it was announced that the cast of “The West Wing” would be taking the stage together to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series.

Reba McEntire and Melissa Peterman from the show “Reba” were reunited on stage as presenters. But this isn’t the first time the friends have teamed up together since the series concluded in 2007. The McEntire guest starred on the Freeform sitcom “Baby Daddy” which Peterman starred on from 2012-2017.

It wasn’t too surprising that the cast of “Schitt’s Creek” also came together again since two of them were hosting the award ceremony. Annie Murphy joined the Levy’s to introduce Catherine O’Hara together who was one of the final presenters of the evening.

John Leguizamo shouts out trailblazers in the entertainment industry

The actor took to the stage to celebrate the diversity of this year’s nominees. Viewers at home appreciated that Leguizamo was able to figuratively give so many people their flowers for leading the way.

Actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal took to the stage to present their category in Spanish, “Greetings to the Spanish speakers in this room and to the more than 50 million Spanish speakers in this country.” Additionally, “Shōgun” star Hiroyuki Sanada delivered part of the series’ acceptance speech in Japanese.

Big Wins

Many of the awards for the evening seemed to go to the same shows: “Shōgun,” “Hacks,” “The Bear” and “Baby Reindeer.” “Shōgun” which was nominated for its first season, won four awards throughout the evening: drama series, lead actor in a drama series to Hiroyuki Sanada, lead actress in a drama series to Anna Sawai and Directing for a drama series to Frederick E.O. Toye.

“Hacks” won three awards, “The Bear” won four awards and “Baby Reindeer” won four awards.
