Jason Hartley learned Tuesday, March 4, he had been accepted to the West Point Military Academy at the same time as millions of Americans.
President Donald Trump surprised the teen with the news during his Joint Address to Congress, Hartley among the invited guests in the gallery above.
Describing the son of a late Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy as a smart student and good athlete, Trump referenced Hartley’s dream of attending the military academy.
“That’s a hard one to get into,” Trump said. “I’m pleased to inform you your application has been accepted.”
A surprised Hartley hugged his mother as those around him applauded. He then flashed the president a thumb’s up.
“Jason, you are going to be on the long grey line,” Trump said, in reference to a parade tradition at the academy, and then continued on with his address, next announcing he is calling for investment into a “golden dome” defensive shield over the United States.
