Taco Bell announces a luxurious San Diego ‘retirement community’ experience

Taco Bell is setting up a pop-up “early retirement community” in the San Diego area.

“The Cantinas” will be a place where “everyone can live like a retiree,” according to a news release.

The promotion is apparently more about Gen Z than AARP, “catering to Gen Z’s culture that values a slower, more relaxed pace of life.”

It will take place Aug. 17-18. The Irvine-based fast food giant will be selling day passes for $50 and weekend memberships for $150 available to Taco Bell Rewards members at noon on Tuesday, July 16.

The news release did not give an address for the event, but a locator map on a website set up for the occasion shows a site near La Valle Coastal Club in Rancho Santa Fe and describes the destination as about 30 minutes from San Diego International Airport.

Festivities will include daytime recreation such as pickleball, special merch, “elevated dining and early bedtimes,” according to the website.

Taco Bell held a similar promotion in August 2019, setting up a four-day “Taco Bell Hotel & Resort” at a mid-century motel near downtown Palm Springs. Rooms were booked in about two minutes.

The event was immersive, including takeovers of the property’s salon for Taco Bell haircuts and designer nails, redoing the guest rooms with Taco Bell decor, and an ice cave serving Baja Blast freezes.
