SPCA reopens its pet adoption center after sheltering animals who fled the fires

After temporarily converting its pet center into housing for animals of fire evacuees, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles will resume facilitating adoptions, officials announced on Friday, Jan. 31.

The spcaLA Pet Adoption Center in West Adams was turned into a sanctuary for pets in need of care as result of multiple fires that broke out in the Los Angeles region.

While staff will continue working on reunifications and extended stays for some animals, officials are encouraging visitors to meet adoptable pets.

Animals still in the organization’s care have been relocated to a different facility for the duration of their stay, officials said.

According to spcaLA, the center will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For people who are interested in adopting animals, they can view the pets at spcaLA.com/adopt.

Over the past few weeks, staff and volunteers have cared for displaced pets. While some owners were able to reclaim their animals quickly, others who lost their homes are still struggling to find pet-friendly housing, officials said.

“Pet restrictions should be lifted or reexamined during this time,” Madeline Bernstein, president of spcaLA, said in a statement. “While we fight price-gouging, this is a good opportunity to encourage pet-friendly housing and address bad pet policies, like breed restrictions.”

SpcaLA continues to seek donations and community support:

— Monetary donations can be provided to spcaLA at spcaLA.com/donate; and

— Los Angeles County residents are encouraged to adopt if they are able.
