Reid Detmers, Jorge Soler deliver as Angels hold off White Sox

THE GAME: The Angels built an early three-run lead behind Jorge Soler’s hot bat then survived a ninth-inning rally from the Chicago White Sox for a 3-2 win in a Cactus League game on Friday afternoon in Tempe, Arizona. The Angels have an additional game Friday night against the Dodgers in Glendale (5 p.m. PT).

PITCHING REPORT: Left-hander Reid Detmers pitched three scoreless innings. He gave up a single and walked two. He struck out two. Detmers, who is competing for the No. 5 starter spot, has allowed one run in five innings in two starts this spring. Detmers said he felt more comfortable out of the stretch than the windup, and also needed to improve his fastball command, but he pleased overall. “All my pitches feel really good right now, so I’m not too worried if something is a little off,” he said. “The slider feels really good, probably the best of them all.” … Left-hander Brock Burke pitched scoreless inning, working around one hit.

HITTING REPORT: Jorge Soler hit his second home run of the spring, a deep drive to center field on an 0-and-2 count. He also lined a double off the fence in left. In his third trip, he lined out to left field. Soler is 5 for 10 this spring. … Travis d’Arnaud lined a double into left center. … Mickey Moniak doubled down the right field line. His double followed the d’Arnaud and Soler doubles in the first inning, producing two runs. … Luis Rengifo went hitless in two at-bats in his first game of the spring. He got off to a late start because of an illness.

DEFENSE REPORT: Right fielder Mike Trout made his second start in his new position, and he finally got some action. After not handling a ball in three innings in his debut, Trout caught a line drive that was over his head and toward the line. He also caught a routine pop-up and cleanly fielded a single on one hop. … Rengifo, who was playing third base, reached over the wall to make a catch of a foul ball.

UP NEXT: Angels (RHP Kyle Hendricks) vs. Athletics (RHP Osvaldo Bido), Saturday, 12:10 p.m. PT, at Tempe Diablo Stadium, FanDuel Sports Network West, 830 AM
