Pope Francis, in a telegram to Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez, expressed his deep sadness over the “loss of life and the widespread destruction” caused by the Southern California wildfires.
The Catholic church’s leader shared prayers and condolences for the victims of the wildfires.
“His Holiness Pope Francis assures you and the communities affected by this tragedy of his spiritual closeness,” said the letter. “Entrusting the souls of the deceased to the loving mercy of Almighty God, His Holiness sends heartfelt condolences to those who mourn their loss. He likewise prays for the relief efforts of the emergency services personnel and imparts his blessing to all as a pledge of consolation and strength in the Lord.”
The L.A. archdiocese issued a list of resources and support offered by Catholic parishes, schools and ministries to help victims of the fires.
The Palisades fire grew to 22,660 acres by Saturday morning, with evacuations expanding rapidly in Encino, Tarzana and Brentwood since Friday night.
The Eaton fire that has caused widespread destruction in several foothill communities grew slightly to 14,117 acres charred by Friday, Jan. 10, with decreased overnight winds helping crews reach 3% containment as they worked to set a perimeter line on the deadly blaze.
At least 11 people have died amid the fires.
