An off-duty Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter has been missing since Wednesday night, Dec. 4, when he went on a recreational dive in the Port of Long Beach, authorities said.
The missing diver, a man in his late 20s, was last seen when he went on the dive with friends. He was not involved with any Fire Department activities at the time.
The firefighter and three friends were free diving, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles City Fire Department. Free diving involves a person holding their breath for as long as possible without the use of equipment such as scuba gear.
He was reported missing around 9:55 p.m. The Long Beach Fire Department responded with divers at around 10:15, Humphrey said.
LAFD, the U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement were still searching for the diver as of mid-day Thursday, Dec. 5, concentrating their efforts on Pier J, where he was last seen.
