The California DMV’s no-fail alternative to the driver’s license renewal test is now available in Spanish.
The eLearning course, taken on a home computer or mobile device, is a video course about 40 minutes long. The applicant watches seven lessons and answers several questions about each.
Multiple tries are allowed for each question, and the DMV says you cannot fail eLearning – if you complete the course, your knowledge test requirement is fulfilled.
The English-language version was rolled out in 2022. A Chinese version is in the works, the Department of Motor Vehicles said; there is no estimated date for its availability.
The eLearning option can be selected by an applicant who has started the renewal process on the DMV’s website. Unlike the at-home online knowledge test, eLearning is not proctored and is available 24 hours a day.

Some drivers — including everyone over 70 — will still have to go to a DMV office for the final steps after completing the knowledge requirement at home, but many will be able to fulfill all renewal requirements online.
The third option for fulfilling the knowledge requirement, other than eLearning or the proctored at-home test, is to take the conventional test on a computer in a DMV office.
For an over-18 applicant, the conventional renewal test has 25 questions, and you must get at least 20 right. You have three tries; if you fail twice on your home setup, you have to go into a DMV office for the last try.
