Man suspected of pointing rifle at LAPD helicopter arrested

A man suspected of pointing a rifle at a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter and barricading himself at a residence in Chatsworth for nearly four hours Friday, March 21 was taken into custody.

Officers responded to the 20000 block of Tipico Street, between Winnetka and Oakdale avenues, one block south of Devonshire Street, around 2:24 p.m. Friday, where a man could be seen from a helicopter lying down near a pool in the backyard of the house with two rifles nearby.

The suspect was taken into custody around 6:15 p.m. after a standoff with law enforcement, according to the police department.

Several broadcast reports indicated that the suspect may have been employed by the homeowner, but police could not confirm if that was accurate.

It was unclear what motivated the man to allegedly point the rifle in the direction of the helicopter, and detectives were continuing an investigation Friday evening.
