Macy’s announced Thursday that it’s closing 66 underperforming stores, including nine in California.
Four of those stores are in Southern California. They include locations in Westminster, at the Westminster Mall and Los Angeles at the Downtown LA Plaza (750 W. 7th St.). Two others are closing in San Diego County (Chula Vista and San Diego).
The company’s closure list indicates the stores will close in the first three months of 2025.
A year ago, Macy’s said it would close 150 underperforming stores as it launched a new retail strategy.
“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go — forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc. offered in a press release.
The 66 store closures are scattered across 21 other states, with California, Florida and New York sustaining the bulk of the shutdowns.
In February 2024, Macy’s said it was closing 150 unproductive namesake stores over three years, including 50 by year-end.
The retailer said it would upgrade its remaining 350 stores, with plans to add more salespeople to fitting areas and shoe departments. At the same time, the company signaled a pivot to luxury, which has fared better overall. It said it would open 15 of its higher-end Bloomingdale’s stores and 30 of its luxury Blue Mercury cosmetics locations.
Macy’s website notes that clearance sales will begin at closing department stores in January and will run for approximately eight to 12 weeks. For Macy’s Backstage stores and Macy’s Furniture Galleries, clearance sales will begin in February and last for six weeks.
Merchandise purchased at Macy’s on or after Jan. 13, 2025 cannot be returned or exchanged at a closing store. Merchandise purchased prior to Jan. 13, 2025 can be returned per Macy’s standard return policy at a designated register through Feb. 11, 2025. Merchandise purchased at Macy’s Furniture Galleries on or after Feb. 3, 2025 can be returned as outlined in the Furniture & Mattress returns policy at macys.com .
Gift cards will not be sold at closing stores after Jan. 11, 2025 but can be redeemed at closing stores until the day of closure.
