Los Angeles Trade-Technical College opens new “Bucky’s Pride Center” for LGBTQ+ students

Coinciding with the week of National Coming Out Day and October’s LGBTQ+ History Month, the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College near downtown L.A. unveiled its new Pride Center at a grand opening event on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Organizers say the space — called Bucky’s Pride Center, after the college’s mascot, Bucky Beaver — will provide resources and an inclusive space for LATTC students who identify as part of the diverse LGBTQIA+ community.

Bucky’s Pride Center on campus meets the college’s “priority to ensure that all LATTC students feel a sense of belonging and community so they can achieve academic and personal success,” a news release said.

Thursday’s opening included remarks from LATTC and Los Angeles Community College District officials including President Alfred McQuarters and trustee David Vela, a raising of the Pride flag, and special performances by local drag artists. Guests enjoyed live music and food, mingled with LGBTQIA+ vendors, and learned about wellness services, STI testing and health resources.

The new Pride Center features computer stations with printing and a social lounge area for students. It will offer mental health and wellness, sexual education, financial assistance, four-year university Pride center resources and more, the release said. Future programming will address the needs of the college’s LGBTQIA+ student population, encouraging advocacy on campus.

Bucky’s Pride Center, at 400 West Washington Blvd., officially opens to students on October 15. The center will operate Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
