Los Angeles Daily News reporter Steve Scauzillo is being honored with the ASCE MLAB 2024 Excellence in Journalism Award for his fair coverage and use of perspectives from the agencies he covers — and the communities they impact.
“We applaud you for this exceptional achievement,” wrote Ben Baker, a senior civil project engineer at Gannett Fleming and past-president of ASCE MLAB (American Society of Civil Engineers, Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch).
Baker said Scauzillo’s work “highlights issues often undercovered/overlooked such as water quality and waste management.” He also cited Scauzillo’s “fair coverage of Metro and transportation infrastructure such as the State Route 39 extension through the San Gabriel Mountains.”
Scauzillo specializes in transportation, environment and county government in Southern California and tackles issues such as subways, light-rail lines, Gold Line, Metrolink, drought, landfills, energy, wildlife and endangered species. He has also served as a city editor and opinion page editor.
He has been a journalist for more than 40 years, and has spent 13 years with the Southern California News Group, a chain of 11 daily newspapers that includes the Los Angeles Daily News.
Scauzillo will receive the Excellence in Journalism Award on Thursday, July 11, at the ASCE MLAB Awards Dinner at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
