LA Metro will close Van Nuys G Line Station for major improvements

LA Metro will close the Van Nuys Metro G Line Station for three years to begin construction of improvements to the station, which is part of Metro’s 18-mile bus rapid transit (BRT) line.

The station closes on Friday, Feb. 21, along with the station parking lot and adjacent bike path section, Metro announced.

The closure will make way for a $668 million bus line upgrade between North Hollywood and Chatsworth, by adding two aerial bridges over Van Nuys Boulevard and Vesper Avenue, allowing the buses to run quicker by avoiding vehicle traffic in that area.

A bridge will be constructed over Sepulveda Boulevard later this year.

The project includes three bus overpasses, an aerial station at Van Nuys Boulevard, new four-way gates at 13 intersections, signal priority upgrades for the buses, and more walkway trees and station lighting.

The project will allow for better mobility, reduced travel times and increased capacity along the corridor. The BRT line is one of the most successful lines in the region, stretching from North Hollywood to Chatsworth, with the highest number of active riders in the San Fernando Valley, Metro reported.

During the Van Nuys Station closure, bus riders must board at a temporary stop located at the northeast corner of Oxnard Street if traveling to Chatsworth, and the southwest corner if traveling to North Hollywood.

Due to the detours, Metro advises riders and cyclists to add five to 10 minutes to their commute times, depending on traffic.

Customers who parked at the Van Nuys Station should instead park at the Sepulveda G Line Station parking lot at 15430 W. Erwin Street, Van Nuys. The lot is accessible from both Haskell Avenue and Erwin Street.

The station’s TAP vending machines will be shut down during the construction period. Instead, riders can go to taptogo.net to purchase TAP fares or go to the nearest TAP vendor. Some vendors include the CVS store at 5601 Van Nuys Blvd. and Ria Transfers at 14440 Victory Blvd.

The G Line will eventually connect to the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project, now under construction.
