Japanese-born bakery and cafe Bread, Espresso & and its executive chef, have crossed the ocean to open the first U.S. location in Redondo Beach.

Founded in 2009 in Tokyo, the bakery has 37 locations across Japan and is known for inventing its mou bread, which is a distinct cube-shaped loaf with a buttery flavor profile, soft interior and a crisp exterior. The first American outpost for the bakery opened Jan. 30 in a 2,000-square foot space at 1212 South Pacific Coast Highway.

The bakery’s Executive Chef Sakurai Tadatsugu, who invented the mou bread, made the trip over from Japan and is relocating to the area to run the kitchen. Besides its famous bread the cafe will offer the mou French toast, served in a mini cast iron skillet, and savory options like the mou soup bowl with lobster bisque, clam chowder and sandwich options that include the ginger pork, honey ham potato salad, and Tandoori chicken. There are also paninis such as the prosciutto mozzarella, smoked salmon cream cheese, turkey ham kinpira, and tomato basil mozzarella. Besides food the menu includes a full coffee bar featuring Caffe Luxxe beans, teas and mocktails.

Bread, Espresso & is located at 1212 South Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach. The cafe is open daily from 7 a.m.- 5 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. It’s closed on Mondays. For more information go to breadespressoand.toast.site
