Granada Hills Christmas Parade, biggest in San Fernando Valley, wows thousands

The 41st annual Granada Hills Holiday Parade marched on Sunday, Dec. 8, with participants using the parade’s theme — “favorite holiday songs” — to draw in a crowd that officials counted in the thousands.

This year’s theme inspired displays along Chatsworth Street. One of the most popular was a dance team of girls dressed up as Santa Claus helpers who kicked their legs and twisted back and forth and laughed and sang and had a lot of fun.

The grand marshal was Los Angeles City Councilmember John Lee who has represented District 12 since 2019. From his frequent grins on Sunday as he waved from a red fire truck he made clear that he was having a great time.

The event featured marching bands, classic cars, equestrians and community groups, and a special “appearance” by Santa and Mrs. Claus who were seen riding, not in a sleigh, but a convertible.

The parade route is 1.8 miles long and its organizers say that more than 3,000 youths are involved in the annual event. The first annual Granada Hills Holiday Parade was held in 1984 and the grand marshall then was soap opera actress Jaclyn Zieman of the TV show General Hospital.

As happens every year, the crowd cheered on Sunday for Santa and Mrs. Claus and asked the holiday duo want they want to find under their Christmas tree.
