Former Caltech professor awarded Nobel Prize in physics

Caltech emeritus professor John Hopfield has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Hopfield, now a professor at Princeton University, and Geoffrey Hinton, a professor at the University of Toronto were awarded for “foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks,” the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in a statement.

The awards were announced Tuesday, Oct. 8.

“This year’s two Nobel Laureates in Physics have used tools from physics to develop methods that are the foundation of today’s powerful machine learning,” the statement read. “John Hopfield created an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and other types of patterns in data.”

Hopfield worked as a Caltech professor from 1980 until 1997.
