Five more facts to celebrate Grand Prix’s 50th birthday coming your way

Here’s another handful of fun facts coming your way.

For the past several days, we’ve presented readers with 50 fun facts about the Grand Prix of Long Beach in honor of the iconic race’s 50th anniversary.

On Sunday, we presented the first 15 facts — followed by an additional five on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Now, we’re on to the next five. Here are facts Nos. 36-40.

The Grand Prix of Long Beach is one of only five street courses in the IndyCar Series season.

It has never rained on the Sunday of the Grand Prix of Long Beach, when the main IndyCar Series race occurs.

IndyCars have multiple types of tires, based on whether drivers are on a street course or an oval circuit, and what the weather is like.

The Grand Prix of Long Beach has only been run on a month other than April twice: During its inaugural year in 1975 and in 2021, when it moved to September because of COVID-19.

IndyCars are loud – really loud. The engines are around 130 decibels, which is about as loud as a jet taking off. On race day, you can hear the cars from miles away.
