Fire on Redondo Beach Pier extinguished; 7 people were temporarily evacuated

Seven people were evacuated as firefighters extinguished a blaze on the Redondo Beach Pier on Monday afternoon, Jan. 6.

Crews responded just after 12:15 p.m. to a fire at Maison Riz, 112 Fisherman’s Wharf, and reported fire and smoke showing from the two-story restaurant with office buildings next to it, said Redondo Beach Fire Chief Patrick Butler.

The fire appeared to have started near an electric business sign but then spread to the building. Firefighters from Redondo Beach and several area departments contained the fire and extinguished it within about 10 minutes, Butler said.

“Any fire that presents itself on that side of the pier is really of high importance to us,” Butler said, because the pier and structures are wooden and a fire could easily spread in the area.

Seven people were temporarily evacuated from neighboring businesses, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
